This is an authentic antique map of Lisbon, Portugal by Matthias Seutter. The map was published out of Ausburg in 1730.
This striking and detailed bird’s eye map of Lisbon with an annotated panorama of the city, viewed from the Tagus (Tajo) River. The map was published just 25 years before the great Lisbon earthquake at a time when the city was both a hub for international trade and home to one of the world’s largest populations of devout Roman Catholics. The earthquake occurred on All Saint’s Day and was followed immediately by mass fires and a tsunami that nearly destroyed the entire city and much of its population.
The view below the map identifies 26 major buildings and locations with two corresponding keys in both Latin and German. Within the map, several streets, buildings, squares, churches, and other place names are identified. In the center, a large text panel presented by a merman and mermaid teaches the history of the city. Both views illustrate the importance of Lisbon as an active city of trade and commerce by showing a variety of merchant ships.
Condition: Map is in B condition, with an old tear repair in the bottom center that extends 3.25 inches into the image.
