This is an authentic antique map of Scandinavia by the Frederick de Wit. The map was published in Amsterdam circa 1680. Dating de Wit's map can be challenging as most of them do not include dates and the atlases were published over long periods of time. This is striking map of Scandinavia includes present day Denmark Norway Sweden Finland Estonia Latvia and portions of Russia Lithuania Poland and Germany.
This impactful map delivers an excellent representation of the rugged physical geography of the area with regard to the plethora of lakes rivers mountains and islands. Important cities such as Oslo Copenhagen Stockholm and Riga are included in the map as well as hundreds of other small towns and villages. The bold title cartouche features three putti a muscular soldier and laborer and the coats of arms of Norway Sweden and Denmark. The map was based on Anders Bure's famous six-sheet map Orbis Arctoi (1626).
Condition: Map is in B condition with strong original color that has been partially refreshed. Light soiling and a few tiny cracks caused by oxidation have been archivally reinforced. Several small chips in blank margins have been professionally repaired including two that enter the map border in top corners with the border expertly replaced in facsimile.
