1634 Persia Sive Sophorum Regnum
By: Willem Janszoon Blaeu
Date: 1634 (dated) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 15 x 19.75 inches (38.1 x 50.2 cm)
This is an authentic antique map of Persia by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. The map was published in Amsterdam and is dated 1634.
This is a decorative and detailed map of a rather unknown area to Western Europeans of the era. The focus on the map is on Persia, but includes areas of present day Iran, Iraq, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Afhganistan, Pakistan, India, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Hundreds of towns and cities are noted as well as rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges. The shape of the Caspian Sea is highly erroneous and a great representation of the lack of geographical knowledge of the area.
A decorative title cartouche shows three Persian gentleman, two of which hold a spear and sword. In the lower right, another cartouche features a dedication to Simon Van Hoorn with a coat of arms atop. Finally, a sailing ship roams the Arabian Sea.
Condition: Map is in A condition, with wide margins and a few minor edge tears that do not come close to the image.
