DESCRIPTION

One of the most celebrated pictorial maps ever produced of Chicago, this vibrant bird's-eye view by Charles Turzak and Henry T. Chapman captures the city during one of the most transformative moments in its history.

The title, "Youthful City of the Big Shoulders, Restless, Ingenious," borrows from Carl Sandburg's famous poetic description of Chicago and presents the city as energetic, ambitious, and constantly reinventing itself. Published in conjunction with the Century of Progress International Exposition, the map served both as a souvenir for visitors and as a visual declaration that Chicago had emerged as one of the world's great modern cities.

The timing of the map's publication is especially significant. Chicago in 1933 stood at the intersection of several major historical developments. The city was entering the final months of Prohibition, while memories of Al Capone and the gang wars of the previous decade remained fresh in the public imagination. Yet rather than dwell on organized crime, Turzak and Chapman portray a city defined by commerce, industry, recreation, and culture. Their Chicago is not a city of bootleggers and speakeasies, but a bustling metropolis filled with parks, theaters, sports venues, transportation networks, and thriving neighborhoods.

A City on Display

At the center of the composition lies the Century of Progress World's Fair, prominently depicted along the lakefront south of the Field Museum and Soldier Field. Opened in 1933 to celebrate the centennial of Chicago's incorporation, the exposition attracted millions of visitors and emphasized science, industry, engineering, and technological innovation. The fair's influence extends throughout the map. Airplanes, dirigibles, flying boats, and other aircraft crowd the skies above the city, reflecting aviation's status as one of the exposition's most popular attractions and symbolizing a future in which air travel would shrink distances and transform daily life.

The map rewards close examination with hundreds of references to Chicago landmarks and regional attractions. Among the many sites identified are the Union Stock Yards, Fort Dearborn, Riverview Amusement Park, Joliet Prison, Aurora Race Track, Brookfield Zoo, and numerous suburban communities. Downtown Chicago is rendered as a dense forest of skyscrapers, while the theater district is marked with comedy and tragedy masks. Waterways, railroads, shipping channels, and highways weave through the composition, emphasizing the transportation networks that helped make Chicago the commercial capital of the Midwest.

An Optimistic Portrait of Chicago

More than a guide map, this is a carefully constructed civic portrait. Turzak and Chapman celebrated the diversity of Chicago's neighborhoods, the scale of its industry, the beauty of its parks and boulevards, and the energy of its people. Produced during the depths of the Great Depression, the map presents a remarkably confident vision of the future, one in which technological progress, international commerce, and civic achievement would propel Chicago forward. Today it stands as one of the most important pictorial maps of the city, preserving a detailed snapshot of Chicago at the height of the Century of Progress era.
