1720 Suyder Zee et de Lembs La Hollande Orientale
By: Pierre Mortier
Date: 1720 (circa) Paris
Dimensions: 24.25 x 35 inches (61.5 x 89 cm)
This antique sea chart of the coast of Holland was originally published in Mortier's "Neptune Francois," one of the most impressive cartographic works ever produced for nautical charts and known to be the most expensive sea-atlas ever published in Amsterdam.
It depicts an area near Holland which for centuries saw heavy seagoing traffic. Its three compass roses orient the map south, and from them radiate innumerable rhumb lines. The chart shows the area in great detail, with the hazards it presents to navigation of it carefully delineated. Water depths and safe anchorages are indicated in places, as are the many areas of shallows.
Condition: Map is in B condition, darkened with age but still a lovely example with bright colors. Margins are reinforced on the verso and a tear has been repaired in the lower left corner.
