1607 FRISIA occidentalis
DESCRIPTION
A fine antique map of east Frisia in northwestern Germany, published in 1607. It was probably as accurate as it could possibly have been, for it depicts Mercator’s homeland, the region in which he was born and spent most of his life.
The map is drawn in detail including cities, towns, fortresses, castles and waterways. Vegetation of the lowlands as it was at the time is depicted pictorially. Fens and marshlands are delineated as are shallows in the sea. The map is embellished with two title cartouches.
This particular example was published after Mercator's death by Jodocus Hondius, and continued to be published for some time.
