By: Willem Blaeu
Date: 1608 (circa) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 9.6 x 21 inches (24.4 x 53.3 cm)
This rare sea chart of the Kattegat and Øresund by Willem Blaue is oriented almost directly east. It covers the west coast of Sweden from Marstrand in the north to Falsterbo in the south. Also denoted are Skagen, Læsø and Anholt, and northeast Zealand with Roskilde Fjord. Depth soundings are denoted and safe harbors marked with miniature anchors. Shoals are clearly delineated. The map is embellished with two compass roses, an ornamental cartouche, and a distance legend is located in the upper right.
Blaeu played a prominent role in the development of early Dutch pilot guides. Having studied with the brilliant Tycho Brahe in 1595-1596, he was highly educated, and trained to be accurate in his observations. His studies with Brahe enabled him to publish a large atlas of sea charts in 1608 which he called Het Licht der Zeevaert, and which included this map. The atlas was to be published a number of times in Dutch, English and French with all charts blank on the verso. No alterations were done to the atlas during the decades of its publication till 1632 when Jacob Colom published his Vyerighe Colom, also an atlas of sea charts. Blaeu’s work was the first choice of navigators from its initial publication to its last, and longer.
Condition: This map is in excellent condition, close to museum quality.
