DESCRIPTION

This map by Italian cartographer Giovanni Tommaso Masi depicts the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, just at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Established in 1496, it was the first Spanish colony in the New World, and it remained under Spanish jurisdiction till 1844 when it declared its independence, naming itself the Dominican Republic.

The map depicts the city and its environs, and includes fortifications, roads, ports and topography. Vegetation and drainage are depicted and the coastlines, shoals and islands are shown in sharp detail. Water depths are delineated to aid navigation. Relief is shown pictorially. The map is oriented north by its miniscule compass rose, and a bar scale is included for distance calculations. An index with key is in the upper right quadrant.
