This is a lively pictorial map illustrated by the Canadian artist Frank A. Eaton. Published in Stage Magazine in December 1933, this map is a fine example of twentieth century illustrative cartography.
Taking a bird’s eye view of midtown Manhattan, the map covers the area from 40th St to 59th St and from Fifth to Eighth Avenue. Featured in the map are various theaters and performance halls like the Metropolitan Opera, the Roxy, the New Amsterdam, and Radio City Music Hall. Also shown around the map are the artist’s recommendations on the area’s best parking––“Good parking space here” is written at the corner of 41st and Eighth, and on 48th and fifth: “One of the biggest and best parking places in the city.” Eaton labels a block on 56th and Eighth, “Nothing of much interest up in this neck of the woods.” Located on 53rd and Eighth is the compass rose, featuring the tragedy and comedy masks Thalia and Melpomene.
Drawn with energy and humor, Frank A. Eaton’s The Stage’s Map of Winter Broadway is a fine showcase of the energy overflowing from New York’s theater district.
Condition: This map is in A condition issued with a magazine, two staple holes appear within the centerfold of the map. Each has been reinforced on the verso.
