Date: 1948, France

This pictorial map of the polar regions is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

The map shows both the North Pole and the South Pole in small circles in the center. Both maps show longitudinal lines. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. There are many portraits on the map, including Sir John Franklin, Martin Frobisher, Jules Dumont d’Urville, Fridtjof Nansen, Jean-Baptiste Charcot, Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, James Clark Ross, Robert Falcon Scott, Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, and Robert Peary. Also included on the map are animals such as seals, sea lions, walruses, seagulls, and penguins; and methods of transportation such as ships, hot air balloons, blimps, planes, and zeppelins, all of which were used in attempts to reach the poles.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.

Condition: Map is in A condition with bright colors nearly full margins save for two corner tears that do not enter the map image.
