This pictorial map of the Antilles is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography.

The Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico) take up the center of the map, with the Lesser Antilles off to the right. The map highlights important cities of the region like Havana, Kingston, Port-au-Prince, and San Juan. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The upper right hand corner shows Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc’s 1635 establishment of the colony of St Pierre, on the island of Martinique. Also included are portraits of Christopher Colombus, Faustin Soulouque, Toussaint Louverture––the most prominent leader of the Haitian Revolution––and Daniel Monbars, a violent French pirate known as Monbars the Exterminator.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.

Condition: Map is in A condition with full margins and bright colors.
