This is one of twelve antique wall maps of the world created by Justsu Pethes based on the data and scientific studies of Dr. Rudolf Geiger. As described within, the map focuses on the topic of annual shortwave radiation reaching the earth's surface after passing a turbid and cloudy atmosphere. The amount of short wave radiation is delineated with isolines in kilo-calories.
Areas that observe the highest amounts of recorded shortwave radiation include the Nile River Valley, and the deserts of central Australia. Areas with an elevation greater than 6,000 feet are depicted in dark grey as without isolines as such readings were difficult to obtain in the 1930s. We do know however that these areas would observe higher levels of short wave radiation due to the lack of atmosphere above. It is also noted that isolines on sea are uncertain due to lack of observation positions.
Dr. Rudolph Geiger (1894 - 1981) was a German meteorologist and climatologist, who worked with Wladimir Peter Köppen and introduced some modifications to the Köppen climate classification, which is one of the most widely used climate classification systems back then and still to this day. It is now often referred to as the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system.
Condition: This wall map is in B condition with a tear in the top right portion. It is still secured to its original rods which can be easily removed for framing purposes upon the request of the buyer.
