This map was published in Philadelphia in Henry Carey and Isaac Lea’s “Complete Historical, Chronological and Geographical American Atlas” in 1822. Many of the original map drawings were drawn by Fielding Lucas, one of the earliest successful map-publishers in Baltimore.

This beautiful and complete map of the state of New York is respectfully depicted as it was in 1822. Marked throughout the map are various American Revolution battle sites. A few locations worthy of note is two separate flags for the Battle of Saratoga. The Patriot victory there on October 17th 1777 was a main turning point in the war, securing French allegiance shortly afterward, in February. Lovingly detailed are the roads, rivers and mountains that traverse the state. Also included is a profile of the Grand Canal in the lower right section of the map.

Included on this map is statistical information regarding the, “great manufacturing state”, with New York City as the, “the greatest emporium of commerce, not only of this state, but of all the United States.” Also included are natural curiosities like the falls of Niagara, the salt deposit of Onondaga, and the springs of Saratoga which, “afford relief in many obstinate diseases.” This geographical information along with the beautiful depiction of New York really makes the Empire State come to life.

Condition: This map is in a B+ condition. The map has two small centerfold separations, one on the bottom and one on the top. Neither split any text or image, but they do reach slightly beyond the margins. There is slight discoloration down the centerfold as well. All together this map has great clarity and is attractively colored.
