DESCRIPTION

A charming midcentury pictorial map of Mackinac Island, combining the island's roads and trails with lively illustrations of its historic sites, natural landmarks, and distinctive horse drawn culture. Drawn by Michigan artist and historian Raymond McCoy, the map guides visitors around the island while highlighting twelve principal attractions, including Fort Mackinac, the Grand Hotel, Arch Rock, Sugar Loaf, Skull Cave, Fort Holmes, and Robinson's Folly.

McCoy fills the island with small historical scenes and local landmarks, from the War of 1812 battlefield and British Landing to Scott's Cave, Devil's Kitchen, the Grand Hotel, and the former John Jacob Astor fur trading house. Roads and walking trails weave among horseback riders, carriages, golfers, ships, and scenic overlooks, capturing Mackinac as both a historic landscape and popular vacation destination. The decorative red and blue printing and illustrated border give the map the appealing appearance of a period tourist souvenir while remaining a practical guide to exploring the island.

McCoy's design was issued in several forms over a period of years. An early version titled A Visitor's Map of Mackinac Island Michigan is documented by 1946, while later variants retain essentially the same geography and illustrations under altered titles. McCoy was particularly well suited to the subject: he also wrote and illustrated works on the history of Mackinac and Michilimackinac, including The Massacre of Old Fort Mackinac.
