About the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad began as a local railroad operating out of Aurora, Illinois in 1849. By the end of the America Civil War it ran exclusively in Illinois from Chicago to several locations along the Mississippi River. Following the war and the opening of the American west, John Murray Forbes and Charles E. Perkins managed a great expansion through consolidation and acquisition of other railroads. In 1868 the CB&Q crossed the Mississippi at Burlington and Quincy to extend its reach into Iowa and Missouri. By the time of this map's publication, the railroad had expanded beyond Nebraska and South Dakota to the eastern range of the Rocky Mountains.
