This pictorial map of China and Japan is a fine example of the work of Blondel la Rougery, a leading cartography company in twentieth century France. Produced in 1948, Blondel la Rougery’s map is a wonderful example of pictorial cartography. 

China and Japan take up the center of the map. The map highlights important cities of the countries like Pékin (Beijing), Tokyo, and Kashgar. Around the print are vignettes of historical scenes and figures. The lower left hand corner shows Marco Polo’s expedition in the Gobi Desert. Also pictured are the Temple of Kyoto, silkworms, the Great Wall of China, porcelain vases, and the Buddha of Kamakura.

The map is in full color with beautiful detail and finely produced illustrations. With its fascinating historical detail, this map by Blondel la Rougery is a beautiful example of mid-century mapmaking and pictorial cartography.
