1574 Tabula Africae III
This Ruscelli map in trapezoid form is from his work La Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino. Based on the work of Ptolemy, this map of northeastern Africa depicts portions of Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, and the northwestern Arabian Peninsula including what is now Israeli territory.
The map presents much topographic detail. All cities and ports are named, river systems and numerous mountain ranges depicted. The Nile is shown running the full width of that part of Africa which the map covers, and its enormous delta with its many branches are shown in great detail, with each branch named. Islands along the north coast of Africa are included and named, as is one in the Arabicus Sinus (Red Sea). Lakes and seas are stippled.
Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566) was an Italian polymath, humanist, editor, and cartographer active in Venice during the early 16th century. Ruscelli is best known for his important revision of Ptolemy's Geographia, published posthumously in 1574.
Condition: This map is in A condition. Mild offsetting in upper right quadrant. Slight discoloration along the centerfold.
