This colorful pictorial map of Illinois was done in 1935 by Ruth Taylor. It appeared in the atlas published by Taylor and her husband Frank Taylor entitled “Our U.S.A. - a Gay Geography”, with maps done by Ruth and text by her husband.
The map provides local color and flavor, depicting cultural stereotypes, industries and activities of the state. Taylor’s map of Illinois is full of images representing the various geographical features and industrial complexes of the 1930s. A long row of tractors is seen driving toward the East. Corn and roses in addition to traditional agricultural crops seem to have played a role in the development of the economy of the state.
Chicago is depicted with all the wonderful art deco architecture which formerly graced the city, much of which has been replaced by modern sky scraping edifices completely lacking the grace of their predecessors. Politicians with placards signify the political climate that has always marked this most American of American cities; and of course, the enormous stockyards which put meat on tables throughout the country are depicted. Lake Michigan and major river systems complete the picture.
