This attractive map by Chatelain focuses on the geography, politics and military achievements of the Republic of Venice from its pinnacle in the 13th century on through till the end of the 17th century, when it was in decline.
The large central map features the Gulf of Venice and the Adriatic Sea flanked by Italy and the Balkans with the Republic of Venice at the top. The map in the lower left quadrant depicts a variety of regions to the west of Venice including Padua, Parma and Milano among others. The upper right quadrant features a map depicting the eastern end of the Mediterranean, the Holy Land, northern Africa, and the Ottoman Empire as far north as the Black Sea and part of modern-day Romania.
The text of the map contains comprehensive and detailed information regarding the Republic and its government, the various cities in it, divisions according to ecclesiastical regions, as well as a list of major ports shown on the map which were at one time or another under the domain of the Republic.
Condition: This hand colored map is in B+ condition. There is some minor soiling in the lower part of the central map.
