This important and scarce map is the first state of Faden’s excellent map of America and the Western Hemisphere, depicting homage to Christopher Columbus just above the title cartouche in the words ‘O Rare Columbus’.
The map is based on the work of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville, who was appointed as First Geographer to the King of France in 1773. The map is meticulously highly detailed and depicts important voyages and discoveries known to D’Anville, with updates added by Faden, who published it as part of his atlas in 1797. William Faden was Geographer to King George III of England.
