This Munster woodcut map of ‘The Holy City of Jerusalem’ was published in German. Place names and accompanying text are all in German. Europeans long considered Jerusalem to be one of the finest and most beautiful cities on the planet, a city whose size and splendor awed all who made their way to it.
Jerusalem was considered by many to be the very center of the world and was often referred to as such. Munster captured much of its beauty in his map, with Mount Zion as a landmark in the upper left quadrant, and the Garden of Gethsemane in the lower left. Further details include a rendering of the Western Wall of the Temple of Solomon along with remains of the Temple itself, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the house of Caiaphus and numerous other ancient buildings. A number of the city’s main gates are depicted in its great walls.
Sebastian Munster was one of Europe’s foremost mapmakers of the 16th century. Ordained as a priest in 1512, he taught Hebrew at a number of universities, but then began to study maps and in 1525 published his first known map, a map of Germany. He wrote treatises on various topics and continued to publish maps till his death in 1552.
