1590 - 1592 Abrahami Patriarchae Peregrinatio, et Vita.
By: Abraham Ortelius
Date: 1590-1592 (Published) Antwerp
Dimensions: 14 x 18.4 inches (35.6 x 47.74 cm)
This elaborate map of the Holy Land is based on the command given to Abraham to take his family and leave the land of their abode to go to another which would be shown to him, which would be given to him and his descendants in everlasting possession.
The map is one of Ortelius’ finest, drawn by the cartographer himself. Intended as a historical work, it shows the land of Canaan, with an inset labeled Arabia detailing the wanderings of Abraham, the revered patriarch of Judaism. The primary map depicts territorial divisions as described in the story of Abraham in the Book of Genesis. Ancient tribal names, cities including Sodom and Gomorah, major fortifications and geographical features are all denoted.
The wanderings depicted in the inset follow Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees, the lower Euphrates Valley, to Shechem, Bethel, Damascus, Egypt and Hebron. The decorative outer border contains twenty two beautiful medallions depicting scenes from the biblical account of Abraham, such as the sacrifice of Isaac, and is further embellished with two decorative cartouches.
The following is Latin text which borders the primary map, and its translation. Abraham egredere de terra tua, et de cognatione tua, et veni in terram quam monstravero tibi, et dabo tibi, et semini tuo post te, terram peregrinationis tuae, omnem terram Chanaan, in possessionem aeternam. Abraham go out from your land with your family to a land which I will show you and will give to you and your descendants after you, the land, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession.
