1600 [Drake’s Landing in New Albion.]
By: Theodor de Bry
Date: 1600 (Published) Frankfurt
Dimensions: 5.25 x 6.8 inches (13.34 x 17.3 cm)
This engraving depicts the landing of Sir Francis Drake at New Albion (now Point Reyes in northern California) being greeted by indigenous peoples and their potentate, who welcomed Drake ashore with great fanfare. Drake subsequently claimed sovereignty of the land for Elizabeth I and every successive English monarch. To document and assert his claim, Drake had an engraved plate of brass containing a sixpence with Elizabeth’s image attached to a large post. He named the area Nova Albion (New Albion) for the white banks and cliffs were similar to those on the English coast and because it was an archaic name by which Great Britain was known.
The map title is in German, and the scene is described in German text just below the image.
