Westermann’s depiction of the great river systems of the continent, the Amazon and de la Plata, highlights the importance of them, accentuating the large regions of the continent which are naturally irrigated by them.
Symbols for elements in the periodic table denote natural resources which are found in various regions of the continent and islands off the coast, including gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead and iron to name a few. Agriculture is well represented with cattle, sheep and myriad crops. Shipping and water sports are featured, as are the oil, cotton and timber industries.
