This authentic antique engraving depicts the constellation Aries, the ram, along with parts of the constellation Taurus and the star cluster Pleiades. Aries has three bright stars and a few significant nebulae or galaxies.
Aries contains several stars with known planets. It is an ancient constellation but it was not officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union until 1922 and its boundaries were not defined in modern times until 1930 when they were outlined by astronomer Eugène Delporte. In astrology, Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, marking the beginning of the astrological year and representing those born between March 21 and April 19. It is a sun sign and traits of those born under the sign include leadership and assertiveness.
In Greek mythology Aries represents the ram whose fleece Jason and the Argonauts sought. When King Athamus took a second wife, Ino, she viewed his existing children as threats as threats to her primacy, and went so far as to desire the sacrifice of his son Phrixus, whom she resented most of all. Nephele, the mother of Phrixis plead with Zeus to save her son and Zeus sent a golden ram to Phrixus and his sister Helle. Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus and then gave its famed golden fleece to King Aettes, the same golden fleece later stolen by Jason.
