This 1857 U.S. Coast Survey maritime map / nautical chart depicts the Napa River and the Mare Island Straits of the San Francisco Bay area.
The chart covers much of the Bay area including Mare Island and the Straits of Karquines, as well as parts of Valejo, which had been the state capital in 1852 -1853. The upper left quadrant under the label ‘Note’ features important seagoing / navigational information. These details describe markings found on the map which include depth soundings, longitude and latitude, variation of the magnetic needle, dates of execution of triangulation, and of recordings of topography and hydrography.
The San Francisco Bay area is home to the oldest Naval Yard on the west coast, and is depicted here in detail. Along with soundings and a compass rose, a detailed plan of the Naval Yard is featured.
Condition: Map is in A condition with lovely bright color over clean paper and full margins on all sides.
