Map illustrating the plan of the defences of the Western & North-Western Frontier, as proposed by Charles Gratiot in his report of Dec. 30, 1837.

By:  J.R. Poinsett, Sec. of War & Charles Gratiot

Date: 1837 (dated) Washington D.C.

Dimensions: 21.75 x 15.5 inches (55.25 x 39.4 cm)

First issue plan of an important map concerning defenses along the frontier. The timing of this map cannot be understated as it was published seven years after the Indian Removal act of 1830 and one year prior to the execution of that plan, most commonly referred to as the Trail of Tears.

The map lists all reservations of Native American tribes that were being moved west across the Mississippi as well as the dates of several treaties of native land ceded to the United States, including the land of the Sioux, Sac and Fox tribes that had already been relocated once before to make way for settlers in the Northwest Territory. Barracks, Forts, and Arsenal locations are noted and interconnected by military roads and trails.

This map showing the proposed defenses by "Charles Gratiot," is one of two issued as part of a report of the Secretary of War. The other map shows proposed defenses by "The Hon J.R. Poinsett." The two maps differ in total number of forts and their location along the frontier land just west of new settlements in the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and the Iowa territory.

Gratiot's map includes a table of distance between forts showing miles and total number of days ride. Poinsett's map does not.

Condition: Maps are in A condition with some light foxing, mostly in the top margin. This maps were originally issued folding, now flattened and ready for framing.
