1876 Guide Map of Chicago
By: Anders Madsen Askevold
Date: 1876 (published) Chicago
Dimensions: 26.25 x 19.5 inches (66.7 x 49.5 cm)
This rare pocket map of Chicago is one of only a few outside of institutions, and the only one known to be currently available. Norwegian-born mapmaker and publisher A.M. Askevold created this marvelous map just five years after the great Chicago fire had destroyed most of the city, including his own firm, Merchants’ Lithographers, which he had founded in Chicago in 1870. His map covers the territory of the city from Central Park in the west to the shores of Lake Michigan in the east and from Lincoln Park in the north to Union Stock Yards in the south, with the southernmost street being 47th.
City wards are numerically and color coded on the map and all streets, railways and rail lines, all important buildings which had so recently been rebuilt are noted. Also delineated are piers, and waterways, including canals and rivers. Parks are described in topographical detail.
Condition: This rare map is in A condition. Published folding, it is now linen backed, reinforcing a very few minor separations on one edge. One small printer’s ink smudge between 29th and 30th streets not far from the lake.
