This lithograph map describes areas in Missouri which are rich in iron ore. It has a grid plan with county lines, and all major settlements and towns are depicted. In addition, waterways, swamps, and Indian fords are shown along with all railroads of the era including the Arkansas & Texas from Birdsville on the Mississippi River to Poplar Bluff. Early French land holdings along the Mississippi in Cape Girardieu, St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve are depicted.
The map also includes historical details of the time. Eight different varieties of iron ore deposits in five different sizes are designated in the coded key by shape and color, the majority of which are to the south and west of St. Louis. Estimates of the quantity of workable ore are in tons, corresponding to the five different sizes of deposits.
