This lovely map by Samuel Augustus Mitchel is a lithograph engraving which is actually three maps in one, featuring California, The San Francisco Bay and Vicinity, and a Map of the Settlements in the Great Salt Lake Country, Utah. Mitchell’s maps are rich in detail and attractive to the eye. This is a first edition of the California map, which starts in southern Oregon and ends in ‘Lower California’.
Mitchell was born in Bristol, Connecticut in the late 18th century. He initially worked as a teacher, during which time he realized there was a dearth of material available for teachers, upon which he turned to geography and mapmaking. He established his own publishing house and eventually became one of America’s foremost cartographers and publisher of atlases.
