A striking large antique map of Japan and its greater empire during the Taisho period, published on November 3rd 1920 by Asahi newspaper. The map presents Japans main islands of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Hokkiado, surrounding smaller islands and the Korean peninsula in a glorious bird's-eye-view format with special attention given to topographical detail. Railroad lines are delineated in red, shipping routes are identified with dashed lines, and major cities are easily found throughout.
The map shows the Japanese empire which notably includes Sakhalin, Taiwan, Korea. The recently acquired formerly German South Pacific Possessions are also shown on the large map in red. These became Japanese mandates in 1919 and remained so until 1947. Korea was formally annexed in 1910. The southern portion of Sakhalin was a part of the 1905 Portsmouth treaty with Russia. Taiwan was annexed in 1895. Finally the Ryukuyan islands were annexed in 1874. The legend shows major infrastructure, government and military buildings, as well as some destinations that may be interesting to tourists
