This small chart by prominent London-based cartographer Thomas Jefferys features the Baltic Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the Gulfs of Finland and Bothnia and the adjacent land masses. It includes parts of Sweden as far north as Lapland, southern Finland, a small portion of Russia including a region called Moscovite Lapland, the Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, and Prussia and Jutland. All major cities are named as are regions in the respective countries. An interesting historical note gives details of the ‘Treaty concluded at Abo on 16 June 1743’. This small chart is embellished by a decorative title cartouche.
Thomas Jeffreys was a highly respected and prolific cartographer operating out of London in the 18th century. He was Geographer to Frederick Prince of Wales and, from 1760, to King George III. Opportunities offered by the Seven Years' War, resulted in his being known best for his maps of North America, and for his central place in the map trade.
