This map was originally published in Philadelphia in Henry Carey and Isaac Lea’s “Complete Historical, Chronological and Geographical American Atlas” in 1822. Many of the original map drawings were drawn by Fielding Lucas, out of Baltimore.

This beautiful piece of Americana displays the entirety of the state of Massachusetts in loving detail as it was in the early 1820’s. Well represented are the towns and cities as well as various geographical elements native to the region. Crisscrossing the beautifully colored map are the roads that were commonly in use. Marking various locations are pink colored flags, these indicate battle or siege sites, some predating the Revolution. Included with the map is the census data from 1810 and 1820, displaying the local growth that was occurring at the time. It includes the declaration that Massachusetts was the, “most thickly-settled state in the union.” Alongside that data are descriptions of the geographical and temperate conditions of Massachusetts in a typical year. Altogether this map is a pristine window into the past complete with all the contextual details needed.

Condition: This map is in A+ condition, with full margins. There is a slight centerfold tear, but it does not affect any text or image. The map is beautifully preserved with no noticeable imperfections in text or image.
