This fine authentic antique map by Hessel Gerritaz, one of the most important Dutch cartographers of the 17th century, was published by Joannes de Laet, one of the founding fathers of the Dutch West Indies Company.
Published in 1630, the map depicts the narrow and treacherous Straits of Magellan, the sea route which separates mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego. The tip of South America, key to European trade with the East Indies, and the newly discovered Strait le Maire are also depicted.
The Gerritaz maps published by De Laet are the only ones available to collectors as the bulk of Gerritaz’ work exists in manuscript form only. The map is presented with north on the right. It is embellished with a strapwork title cartouche, a compass rose, and a banner containing three distance scales, in English, Dutch and Spanish.
Condition: This map is in B condition. A small hole near the title cartouche and one (repaired) near the center. Light soiling around the edges. Full borders.
