Date: 1720 (Published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 14.5 x 17 inches (36.8 cm x 43.2 cm)
This is an authentic antique print of scenes from the Antilles in the early 18th century, created by Henri Abraham Chatelain and published in 1720 as part of his seven-volume work “Atlas Historique”.
Boldly printed quadrupeds, birds and reptiles are featured in the center panels. Vignettes to each side depict curious scenes of local life, including the ambush of an elephant in a garden nestled below a hilltop fortification, and to the right, a hunt conducted by indigenous locals who vigorously pursue and slaughter wild pigs.
This print presents interesting views of life in what was still the ‘New World’, with generous amounts of text (in French) describing the scenes depicted.
Condition: This print is in B condition with light toning around the edges and along the center fold. There was a center fold separation in the lower margin that has been repaired on the verso. Print exhibits a strong impression, with full margins.
