Dimensions: 15 x 19.25 inches (38 cm x 48.9 cm)

This authentic antique folio page from the marvelous Atlas Historique of Henri Abraham Chatelain is a detailed study of Siam in the early years of the eighteenth century. It features a city in Siam with majestic pagodas, a great number of exotic sea-faring vessels (some designated for royalty) of different kinds plying their way on seas and other waterways.

The king of Siam is shown mounted on his elephant, replete with all his vestments. An illustration in the center features plants which were considered to have almost magical qualities in the West, such as ginseng and betel. Elephants equipped to carry 'a princess' and 'a stranger' are drawn in great detail, and in the final illustration we see a mandarin standing in front of a monastery.

Condition: This map is in B condition. There is toning of the borders and a centerfold separation which has been repaired with archival material on the verso.
