By: Henri Abraham Chatelain

Date: 1705 (Published) Paris

Dimensions: 14.5 x 19 inches (37 cm x 48.3 cm)

This view of Bethlehem and Nazareth depicts these places and vestiges of their history (ancient ruins) which were extant in the early eighteenth century. Chatelain includes a lovely depiction of two of the most important churches of Christendom, the ‘Grotto of the Annunciation’, where it is said The Annunciation took place, and the ‘Church of Cana’, where Christ is said to have turned water to wine for the wedding guests. Through Chatelain’s skilled and sensitive rendering we feel the cool, still air inside the thick walls, the hushed atmosphere as one contemplates the stories of early Christendom.

His view of Bethlehem depicts locals leading Europeans to ancient ruins which are inscribed in Latin. One easily shares the excitement felt by the Europeans as they explored these ancient venerated places for the first time. A fountain from antiquity serves as the watering place for a shepherd’s flock of sheep. Migrating geese grace the skies over Bethlehem, spring seems in the air.

Condition: This map is in A condition, a strong impression on heavy paper. Toning at outer edges of borders.
