1707 America, of Nieuw-Ontdekte Weereld, tot de Beschryving van Joseph d'Acosta afgebakend
By: Pieter van der Aa
Date: 1707 (Published) Leiden
Dimensions: 6.25 X 9.25 inches (16 cm x 23.5 cm)
This remarkable hand-colored authentic antique map by Dutch cartographer Pieter van der AA depicts North and South America, a large portion of western Africa, the British Isles and parts of western Europe. The focus of the map is South America.
The maps for his atlases are often of a smaller scale than those of his contemporaries, and are miniature works of art and science combined. While frequently based on the work of other cartographers, this in no way diminishes the important of his work nor the esteem in which he was held.
This particular map depicts the continent of South America in high detail, including the great estuary 'Rio de Plata', the longest in the world. Mountain chains of the continent are illustrated, and the Straits of Magellan are detailed.
The map is embellished with a fanciful and ornate title cartouche in which Europeans are seen seated at a table consulting a globe, with some indigenous peoples in attendance. A frigate sails a calm sea near the shore, which is graced by flora native to the region. This map is based on the work of sixteenth century Jesuit missionary and naturalist, Ioseph d'Acosta.
Condition: This map is in A condition. Minor centerfold rolling.
