1707 d'Engelze Volkplanting in Virginie door Iohan Smith Bezogt en verder uytgeset
By: Pieter van der Aa
Date: 1707 (Published) Leiden
Dimensions: 6.5 x 9.5 inches (16.5 cm x 24 cm)
This authentic antique map is an exquisite hand colored example of a scarce map, one based on that of Iohann Smith. Only one or two of these maps have been on the market in the past twenty years. The territory covered extends from a Canadian archipelago and the Groote River in the upper right quadrant southward to Chesapeake Bay and beyond.
It is highly detailed with information concerning Indian tribes, forests, hills and mountains, rivers and lakes. In the lower right quadrant a European is introduced to a leader of indigenous peoples. The relations are obviously less than civil as two bodies lie in the background and a troop of armed men approach. Two frigates are resting in the bay along with an elegant compass rose.
Condition: This map is in A condition with slight toning at the upper border and on one fold.
