1564 Tabula Europae II
By: Valgrisi-Ruscelli
Date: 1561 (Published) Venice
Dimensions: 7.6 x 10.25 inches (19.3 x 26.04 cm)
This map of Spain was published in the 1561 edition of Ruscelli’s Atlas, an expanded edition of the 1548 edition Gastaldi’s Atlas. The map depicts the Iberian peninsula in its entirety, going beyond the Pyrenees in the northeast and extending to northwest Africa in the south. Cities, river systems and mountain ranges are all depicted in this remarkably accurate map. Spain is described in Latin on the verso.
Gastaldi’s was considered the most comprehensive atlas produced between the Geographiae of Martin Waldseemüller in 1513 and the Theatrum of Abraham Ortelius in 1570. Due to Gastaldi having always sought the best and most current geographical data available, the maps of Rusceli’s Atlas are some of the most accurate maps of their time.
Ruscelli and Gastaldi’s maps were engraved on copper, a change in technology which would change the history of cartography. From that time on most cartographic works would be published using this medium.
