1821 GEOGRAPHICAL AND STATISTICAL MAP OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL. Map of Spain and Portugal Including the places rendered celebrated by Battles & Sieges Intended for the Elucidation of Lavoisne's Historical Atlas.
By: Henry Charles Carey & Isaac Lea
Date: 1821 (Published) Philadelphia
Dimensions: 16.5 x 20 (42 cm x 51 cm)
Description: This striking authentic antique map was issued hand-colored for the third American edition of the Atlas. It depicts and details Spain and Portugal, and features parts of France and northern Africa, which are not detailed.
Spain's primary mountain ranges, the Sierra Morenas, the Pyrenees, and the Cantabrians are beautifully detailed as is the Sierra Nevada range. Such features, along with the detailed descriptions of the country and its inhabitants would have, in 1821, made the owners of these maps feel well-acquainted with Spain and Portugal and their inhabitants, their climates, histories, battles and sieges, religions and even commerce.
The maps from this Atlas provide a wealth of information to people who, if unable to travel extensively, had to rely on the observations of others in order to become acquainted with foreign places and climes, and they provided an exceptional opportunity to do precisely that.
Condition: This map is in A condition. Light toning of the centerfold, minor foxing and offsetting.
