1595 Indiae Orientalis Insularum Que Adiacientium Typus
By: Abraham Ortelius
Date: 1595 (circa)
Dimensions: 13.75 x 19.5 inches (35 cm x 50 cm)
This splendid hand-colored authentic antique map by Abraham Ortelius finely describes and illustrates portions of SE Asia, Japan, the Philippines, New Guinea, etc. The map includes Beach and other information drawn from Marco Polo. It also includes a portion of the West Coast of North America, including several mythical names in California. It is based on Mercator's world map of 1569.
Due to the difficulty of mapping this archipelago, for centuries to come maps of this area were faulty. Sumatra and Java are significantly oversized, and the Philippines are incomplete and without the Northern island of Luzon.
The mermaids, who are beautifying themselves rather than heeding the whales' attack on nearby ships, are based on those occurring on Diego Gutierrez map of America. The map is from a Latin edition of the Atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum".
Condition: This map is in A condition on heavy paper with some toning at the centerfold.
