This authentic antique map is the work of Rigobert Bonne, one of the most important French cartographers of the late eighteenth century. In 1773 Bonne became Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer. In his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the time. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic.

This map of South America includes Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia and is a fine example of his proclivity to render coastal regions in great detail, with the directions of ocean currents indicated. At the same time he shows the Amazon and its tributaries, along with many other inland topographical features. The legend contains distance scales for four different countries.

Condition: Engraved on light paper, this rare map is in A condition with slight toning at the left and lower borders.
