This lovely hand-colored authentic antique map by Chatelain depicts the ‘State of Moscow in Europe’ or the more western areas of Moscovie in the early eighteenth century. The upper left quadrant depicts the region of Pskov, one of the areas settled earliest in the history of Rus’, by at least the tenth century. To the south we see the borders of Lithuania, which was a large kingdom at that time, Russian Poland, and in the lower left quadrant, Ukraine. Chatelain depicts the great forests of the central areas of the Russian State, the various Duchies, major waterways, etc. The eastern limits of the map include the Kingdoms of Kazan, Astrakan, The Duchy of Bulgar, and Circassia. The map's regions are designated by color. Historical events, geographical and topographical features include cities, forests, mountains, all noted in Chatelain’s unique style.
Condition: This map is in A condition with toning and some water stains at the borders and some spotting. There is a slight roll of the centerfold.
