Date: 1878 / 1906 (dated) Washington, D.C.
Dimensions: 19.25 x 26.25 inches (48.9 cm x 66.68 cm)
This attractive, rare map of the Hawaiian island of Lanai was published to accompany a report to the US Secretary of the Interior submitted in 1900 by the governor of the Hawaiian Territory. This map, updated in 1906 was based on the cartographic work undertaken in 1878 under the Hawaiian Monarchy. It was issued along with the report which it accompanied following the 1898 annexation of the territories by the U.S. Government.
The report evaluated and described the Territory’s potential regarding extraction and development of valued natural resources. It cites information concerning pineapple and sugar plantations, forest lands and reserves, grazing lands and wetlands, public lands and homestead settlement plots. Topographic details which would enhance administration of these lands are well defined.
Condition: This map is in A condition, published folding, now linen backed for preservation and presentation purposes. There is very slight soiling at some folds, and minimal separation at crease corners, all reinforced by the professional backing.
