This authentic antique hand-colored map by Jan Jansson depicts the Northern Archipelago in Greece with the Aegean and territories surrounding it, including parts of Europe and western Asia Minor. Greek Islands of note include Lemnos, Lesbos, Scios and Scirus. Smaller islands are also noted with detailed information including village names and rivers. Mount Ida is carefully detailed near Troy and mountain ranges clearly defined wherever they occur. Most if not all ancient Greek settlements are noted.
Typical of Jansson is the lovely, colorful title cartouche in the upper right quadrant featuring putti holding harvested wheat. Animal husbandry is alluded to by the farm animals. Other decorative elements include elegant script denoting the Aegean.
There is Latin text on the verso describing the Northern Archipelago and the land masses surrounding it.
Condition: This map is in C+ condition with narrow margins. Toning and foxing. Archival tape has been used on the centerfold on the verso.
