1861 Johnson's Austria Turkey in Europe and Greece
By: Johnson & Browning
Date: 1861 (undated)
Dimensions: 17 x 23.75 inches (43.18 cm x 60.33 cm)
This authentic antique hand colored map by Johnson and Browning is a good example of their 1861 version of the Austrian Empire and the regions of Europe under the control of the Ottomans. Color-coded by districts. An image in the lower right quadrant mistakenly names the edifice pictured as St. Sophia, which it clearly is not. St. Sophia, better known as Hagia Sophia had the same iconic outline from the time it was built by Justinian I in 537 to the modern era, aside from the addition by the Ottomans of 4 minarets which did not alter its basic architectural integrity.
Condition: This map is in B+ condition. Full borders with even toning around the edges. Minimal foxing. Centerfold separations have been repaired with archival material.
