1680 Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio.
By: Justus Danckerts
Date: 1680 (Published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 19.25 x 22.5 inches (49 x 57 cm)
This Danckerts map of the Americas is a reissue of the same map issued by Frederick De Wit in 1675, with all its geographic curiosities intact.
California is shown as an island, based on Sanson's model. The Great Lakes are shown with an open western coastline to Lake Superior and an absence of a Northwestern coast beyond 40 degrees. A hopeful extension from Button's Bay is shown portending a possible Northwest Passage. Reference is made to the legendary seven cities of Cibola in the Southwestern US. Depiction of the Mississippi River is still vague and shown far west of its true mouth. The large lake in the Southeastern US first seen on Le Moyne's map is still present.
South America retains its excessively wide format. The interior of the continents are filled with towns, villages, native tribe locations, mountains, rivers, and detailed vignettes of indigenous animals, and a native village. Two magnificent decorative cartouches featuring indigenous peoples, angels, and flora and fauna adorn the map. This edition of the map, lacking ships at sea, is considered scarce.
Condition: This map is in B condition. It features old hand color. Separations, which enter the image, have been repaired with archival material on the verso. There is some soiling and the map has been marked with red ink in places.
