1579 Cambriae Typus Auctore Humfredo Lhuydo…
By: Abraham Ortelius
Date: 1579 (Published) Amsterdam
Dimensions: 14.5 x 19.5 inches (36.8 cm x 49.5 cm)
This is an authentic, antique map of Wales published out of Amsterdam in the 1579 Spanish edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
This is the first state of the first printed map of Wales. The map was based off of Humphrey Lhuyd’s map of Wales from 1568, as well as Mercator's 8-sheet wall map of the British Isles circa 1564. The map details several rivers, mountains ranges, forests and notes numerous place names throughout. In the top right, the coast of Ireland with Dublin is shown. The map is embellished with a sea monster, sailing ship, distance scale in English miles, and an early baroque style title cartouche.
Condition: This map is in B condition with extended side margins. A paper fold appears in the lower left corner that is likely contemporaneous with the printing of the map. Near the center of the map, an area of oxidation has created two very small holes. Map displays original coloring with some light offsetting.
