By: Herman Moll

Date: 1721 (Published) London

Dimensions: 7 x 10 inches (17.8 cm x 25.4 cm)

This authentic antique map by Moll was based on the important map by Gascoyne of 1682. The primary map covers the coast of Carolina from Cape Henry to B. St. Matheo. The Appalachian Mountains are included as are numerous forest lands. Counties and rivers are named.

The smaller map on the right, within its own neatline, is a map of Bermuda. Here Moll draws miniscule castles and forts throughout the island, according to the territories of the 'tribes' to whom they belonged, including names such as Smiths Tribe, Pagets Tribe, Warwik Tribe, etc. Moll, a Dutchman who made England his home from 1680 on, was known as the most prolific designer and publisher of maps of Carolina, and as an open and effective protagonist for British Territorial claims in North America, just as Delisle was for the French.

Condition: This map is in A condition with even toning. Folded as published.
